With the new release of SAP Fiori Tools – SAP Fiori application, a new application generator that supports both SAPUI5 freestyle applications and SAP Fiori elements. In this blog post, we will talk about this new generator and its features.
SAP Fiori tools simplify the development of SAPUI5 and Fiori elements application by providing extensions in SAP Business Application Studio and VS Code. Previously there are two separator generators for each type of application.
A new application generator
With the new release of SAP Fiori tools, a new project generator is available for both SAP Fiori elements and SAPUI5 freestyle apps. The new application generator is available to use in trial and production SAP BTP accounts.
The existing, separate project generators will be deprecated soon in SAP Business Application Studio and it’s recommended to use the new generator.
Benefits
With the new project generator,
- Common wizard steps for both types of applications.
- The preview feature is available now for SAPUI5 freestyle applications previously only available for SAP Fiori elements.
Now, lets create an application with this new project template.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Launch the project creation wizard from Welcome page.

- Floorplan Selection
In this next step, choose the application type – SAP Fiori elements or SAPUI5 freestyle based on the application type selected, the floorplans will be proposed.

- Data Source and Service Selection
As per your requirement, different options are available to configure the data source and service selection. To keep it simple I selected “None”.

- Entity Selection
Provide the view name.

- Project Attributes – the most important step
Enter the Project name, Application Title and Description. Scroll down to add deployment and FLP configurations.

- Deployment Configuration
Choose the target deployment – ABAP (or) Cloud Foundry. Select the backend destination name from the drop-down.

If you select ABAP, then the required fields to provide will be different.

- Finish
Once the project wizard is finished, the newly created application will not open in a workspace. File -> Open Workspace to open the project.

With the new application generator, we now can follow a common approach for building SAP Fiori apps and simplifies the floorplan selection of both SAP Fiori elements and SAPUI5 freestyle application types.
